4 Unique and Interesting Ways to Improve Company Culture

Company Culture

What exactly is company culture and why is it so important to the success (or failure) of your organization?

“Individual commitment to a group effort – that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.” – Vince Lombardi

You may have heard the buzzword thrown around before – Company Culture. But what exactly is company culture and why is it so important to the success (or failure) of your organization? Well, Dictionary.com defines company culture as “the philosophy, values, behavior, dress codes, etc., that together constitute the unique style and policies of a company.” In layman’s terms, company culture is how you get things done, and a strong culture more often than not means a strong business. Unfortunately, not every company has a strong culture. So, how do you turn things around?

4 Unique and Interesting Ways to Improve Company Culture

Shake Things Up

“In a gentle way, you can shake the world.”

– Mahatma Gandhi

One way to improve your office is to start from scratch. Reorganize and rearrange. And consider doing so often. Instead of assigned desks, adopt an open office format and allow your employees to move around. Breaking down physical barriers, such as cubicles, will also help break down communication  barriers and help improve collaboration.

Companies with engaged employees outperform those without by up to 202%, according to “18 Statistics About Company Culture You Can’t Afford To Ignore.”

Training and Development

“Job training empowers people to realize their dreams and improve their lives.”

– Sylvia Mathews Burwell

If your employees are the lifeblood of your business, doesn’t it make sense to ensure they are well-trained and fully capable of handling the task at hand? For this reason, consider investing in your employee’s training and development – job shadowing, career coaching, mentoring, networking, virtual learning (eLearning) sessions, and formal classroom instruction. This will not only help improve the value of your employees, but will also help show them that you are committed to them, which will, in turn, help boost productivity. That’s what we call a win-win.

Work-Life Balance

“Happiness is not a matter of intensity but of balance, order, rhythm and harmony.”

– Thomas Merton

Just 42.1 percent of workers feel they maintain a good work and life balance, according to a survey of nearly 2,000 employees. One way to help improve this statistic in your company is to offer your employees a flexible work schedule. This will allow them to more easily balance their workload with their personal and family lives.

Get Up – Get Moving

“The best morale exists when you never hear the word mentioned. When you hear a lot of talk about it, it’s usually lousy.”

– Dwight D. Eisenhower

As the old saying goes, “The family that plays together stays together.” Well, the same goes for your company.  Sometimes the best way to improve your office morale is to get up and get out of the office. You can hold a happy hour, go bowling, take your employees out to dinner, or, if you want to enact real, positive change, you can consider team building.

Presented in a fun and creative way, team building exercises help break down communication barriers and encourage collaboration amongst your employees.

I really liked this article, especially since I’m planning on managing a bunch of sales reps this summer. I loved the advice about get up – get moving. Training is definitely important, but sometimes you just have to dive in and get your feet wet before you can really master something. Thanks for sharing this.
