Companies and organizations are often faced with a desire to improve their team’s performance through team building but have limited budgets. Loss of billable hours, high transportation costs make team building programs challenging to afford.
Good news! Team building can be done in many locations including your own facility, local hotel/meeting room, local field/park, or of course, a challenge course like our facility at Terrapin Adventures in Savage Maryland. Many team building exercises are done on the ground to be inclusive so there are many options. Based upon your objectives, program can be designed using portable equipment that can easily be transported anywhere. Creativity is paramount as a good facilitator can transport a group anywhere using a fun story line. Team building events can also be done inside or outside. While we enjoy the fresh air, the weather does not always cooperate. The key ingredient is floor space and for participants to wear comfortable clothes. A good rule of thumb is to have 500 square feet for every group of 10-15 participants. The key to a good team building event is if the participants are engaged. Engagement comes from team building facilitators who can read groups quickly and get them to actively participate using their imagination. Finally, the facilitator must be able to change on the fly. If an exercise is not working, change it up, add constraints or make it easier so the group can benefit from the activity.
