Team Building Tip of the Month:  Green Eggs & Ham: Being Open to Change

I recently saw an old classic book by Dr. Seuss, Green Eggs & Ham.  In it, the main character is insistent that he would not like to try green eggs and ham, as it is unfamiliar to him.  After much persistence and permutations, our protagonist, Sam I Am, gets our reluctant character to try it and lo and behold he enjoys them.

When people hear new ideas it is easy to stay in the familiar and declare our position as fixed.  It is sometimes hard to be open to new ways of doing things and new concepts.  We know what works and why should we change?

Well for one, diversity is the spice of life.  Doing the same thing the same way over and over creates a dull experience.   Second is the new idea or approach may yield better results.  While there are benefits to standardization of processes (think McDonalds), new approaches can save time, money, and produce higher levels of customer satisfaction.  Employees may be energized by learning something new and trying a new approach.

If you have an organization stuck in the mud, resistant to change, try a series of exercises that help open people to new possibilities.  Create a problem outside your normal work boundaries and challenge everyone to create some solutions.  Embrace ideas and encourage thinking outside the box.  You will be amazed at what people can do when not constrained by the familiar and they are open to change.
