Improve Productivity in 6 Easy Steps

Improve Productivity

How do you get your employees working at peak efficiency? How do you improve productivity?

No one ever said running a business was easy. If it was, everyone would be doing it. There is so much to do just to get your business off the ground. And then, once it is up and running, it takes constant effort to ensure everything is running smoothly and productivity is at a high level.

There are only so many hours in a day, so it is important to make sure your employees are utilizing those hours to the best of their ability. This will help you better serve your customers/clients and will also help you increase profitability. That’s what we like to call a win-win! But just how do you get your employees working at peak efficiency? How do you improve productivity?

Simple Tips to Help You Improve Productivity

As the old saying goes, work smarter, not harder. This principal is the very foundation of productivity. By working smarter, we increase efficiency and, thus, become more productive. And it is easier done than said (yea, that’s what we meant). Being more productive isn’t rocket science. You just have to do it.

  1. Use Your Time Wisely: Budget your time for certain tasks. If you know what you have to get done in a given day, make a list and schedule your tasks accordingly, setting self-imposed deadlines for each. Do your best to stick to that schedule and you will find that you can get much more done in a day. And quit multi-tasking. While it mean seem like a great way to increase productivity and get a lot done, the opposite is actually true. According to psychologists, multi-tasking can result in lost time and productivity.
  2. Take Breaks: This might sound counterproductive, but taking breaks can actually help you stay productive. Giving yourself or your employees a mental break helps improve concentration. In fact, research has shown that taking short breaks can help workers maintain a constant level of performance. Now, if you want to take your breaks to the next level, get up and get moving. According to a study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, using work time to exercise may help improve productivity.
  3. Conquer Small Tasks as They Come: Entrepreneur Steve Olenski calls this the “two-minute rule.” If a task arises and it can be completed in less than two minutes, do it immediately. Procrastination is the enemy of productivity.
  4. Nobody’s Perfect: Give up on the illusion of perfection. No one is perfect. Instead of trying to be a perfectionist, do your job, your task to the best of your ability. You’ll be amazed at how much this simple change in mindset can help improve productivity.
  5. Eliminate Technological Distractions: Email is a great business tool. Text messaging is perfect for quick communication. The same goes for instant messenger.  Facebook, Twitter, and social media are excellent ways to stay connected. But you cannot let these technologies become a distraction in the workplace. Turn off the notifications and build time into your schedule to check email and messages.
  6. Teamwork: Being able to work effectively in a group is not only a valuable trait, it is also a necessity in the business world. Teamwork plays an important role in the day-to-day operations of the typical American office.
