Getting to Know Brett Self: Operations Manager and Team Building Facilitator

Brett Self recently graduated from Stevenson University with a Psychology degree. He has been with Terrapin Adventures for four years now, using his unique style and humor to work with groups and help them improve their relationships. Brett enjoys reading and chilling outside. He likes competing in football, soccer and rock climbing and relishes new active challenges like wind surfing or running with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain. Brett is also an avid hiker, having tackled multiple sections of the Appalachian Trail. He has even backpacked throughout Western Europe.

Brett is also certified in Wilderness First Aid.

Favorite Team Building Exercise: Brett enjoys seeing team building groups progress throughout the day, struggling at first before having that all important break through. That “Aha!” moment. His favorite exercise is Human Gyroscope, where participants must turn a volunteer from the group 360 degrees around. This high risk- high reward activity produces great communication, cooperation, trust, and a tremendous feeling of accomplishment.

“You all run a great program. It was easy to set up, and the concerns dissipated quickly on the day of the team building event.  Many of the the other staff members have praised your performance.  Thank you! As an organization that is growing and developing, this was a great way to frame our values discussion and to have us establish our cultural ideologies.”

- Kate Stritzinger, Transitional Housing Corporation

Memorable Moment At Adventure Park: While Brett philosophically tries to let guests figure things out themselves, there was one instance when a dad and his daughter were struggling on the high course. The dad decided to stop and go down to the ground, but the young girl wanted to try some more. Unfortunately she had a panic attack and Brett responded by literally putting her on his back to complete a section of the course.
